Eight Introduces Arashiyama Collective in Kyoto

A New Cultural Chapter for Daimaru Matsuzakaya

Hong Kong, 4 Nov 2026 – Global branding and design firm Eight Partnership has unveiled its creative work for Arashiyama Collective, a new independent art destination marking a significant step beyond the traditional department store model of Japanese retail institution Daimaru Matsuzakaya. Set to open in Kyoto's historic Arashiyama district in April 2027, the venture brings the group's longstanding cultural expertise into a new setting dedicated to contemporary art and creative exchange. Eight developed the brand strategy, storytelling, naming, visual identity and communications, establishing a distinctive identity for this chapter.

Renowned for its bamboo groves, seasonal landscapes and centuries of artistic and literary heritage, Arashiyama offers common ground for contemporary cultural exchange. For Daimaru Matsuzakaya, whose roots in Kyoto span more than 300 years of fine textiles, fashion and artistic patronage, this historic setting provides an opportunity to give its legacy new expression. Against this backdrop, Eight developed the concept of a setting for artistic exchange, where contemporary art meets traditional craftsmanship, luxury and creative perspectives from Japan and beyond.

The name Arashiyama Collective unites the distinctive cultural identity of its setting with the collective energy of those drawn to it. Guided by the vision of The Artsmanship Society, the destination brings together an exclusive circle of artists, discerning collectors, galleries and cultural patrons, fostering connections across disciplines and generations through exceptional art, creative dialogue and bespoke collector experiences.

The visual identity takes its cues from Arashiyama's celebrated bamboo groves, translating the landscape into a graphic language of striking simplicity. At its heart, the AC monogram draws on bamboo-like lines, with the A evoking Arashiyama's mountains and the C expressing the gathering of diverse people. Across printed materials and communications, a predominantly monochromatic palette provides a quiet counterpoint to the richness of the art on display, allowing the artworks themselves to take centre stage.

“Arashiyama Collective builds on our longstanding initiatives in art and culture,” said Shunsuke Murata, Manager (New Art Development) at Daimaru Matsuzakaya Department Stores. “Drawing on the unique setting of Arashiyama, Kyoto, we aim to create cultural collaborations and experiences that go beyond the traditional department store environment, establishing a new hub for cultural exchange.”

“The most interesting cultural destinations today are the ones that resist easy definitions,” said Chris Fjelddahl, Partner at Eight. “A gallery should have a point of view without telling people what to see. That tension shaped our thinking for Arashiyama Collective, creating a brand identity with the character to stand on its own and the openness to evolve.”

Designed by architect Kentaro Ishida of KIAS, Arashiyama Collective will occupy a two-storey building with an open gallery on the first floor and an invitation-only salon above, offering a more personalised setting for private viewings and collector experiences. Its inaugural exhibition will feature internationally acclaimed contemporary artist Tatsuo Miyajima, whose work explores themes of time and life. Building on Daimaru Matsuzakaya's established art initiatives, the destination opens a new platform for cultural collaboration beyond the traditional retail environment.
