Eight Unveils LaneJoy in Shanghai

The New Standard for Neighbourhood Streets Bringing Communities Together

Hong Kong, 3 Sep 2026 – Global branding and design firm Eight Partnership introduces LaneJoy, a new community retail brand created for Shanghai Industrial Urban Development Group (SIUD). Developed to address the long-overlooked need for community malls in China's urban landscape, LaneJoy reimagines traditional neighbourhood streets as vibrant, people-centred hubs. The brand will make its debut with the 1,688 m² LaneJoy Qihe in Shanghai, opening in Q4 2026, before expanding across Shanghai and later to cities including Xi'an, Tianjin and Shenyang.

Eight was appointed to develop the brand strategy, positioning and visual identity for LaneJoy. Anchored by the positioning "Where You Belong" (此心安处便是邻街), the strategy responds to the dual challenge of commercial sustainability and social responsibility, creating a more participatory and resilient neighbourhood ecosystem. Centred around four key community groups comprising seniors, families with children, pet owners and local merchants, it supports both everyday convenience and neighbourhood engagement.

To translate the strategy into a recognisable experience, Eight developed a visual identity inspired by the relationships that shape neighbourhood life. Drawing from the woven structure of a traditional market basket, the logo features interwoven lines symbolising the convergence of streets, communities and commerce. A layered palette of greens and approachable typography evokes freshness and familiarity, creating a contemporary expression of trust, reciprocity and shared belonging that underpin thriving local communities.

This vision extends into the physical and experiential transformation of community retail spaces. Through facade upgrades, public space optimisation, integrated environmental graphics and signage improvements, LaneJoy creates a cleaner and more open neighbourhood atmosphere, shifting the perception of community commerce from disorganised and purely functional into a place of pride for residents, one that feels safe, inviting and integral to neighbourhood life.

“Neighbourhood streets have always been an important part of daily life, but many have not evolved alongside the communities they serve,” said He Bin, Vice President of SIUD. “With LaneJoy, our aspiration is to create a model that goes beyond upgrading shops to rebuild the connective tissue of communities. By supporting local businesses and encouraging greater participation from residents, we aim to create places people use every day and genuinely feel they belong.”

“Projects like LaneJoy remind us that the places people value most are often part of their everyday routines,” said Chris Fjelddahl, Partner at Eight Partnership. “What made this brief particularly interesting was the challenge of balancing commercial performance with social warmth. The result is a framework that can grow and adapt across different neighbourhoods while remaining responsive to the character and needs of each local community.”

Built around the principles of the “15-minute community living circle”, LaneJoy builds upon SIUD's established retail supply network to deliver quality, fresh and traceable daily essentials, while fostering resident-led markets and community activities. Standardised enough to scale yet flexible enough to reflect the qualities of each neighbourhood, the model brings together placemaking, operational strategy and community participation within a unified framework, offering a branded, scalable approach to neighbourhood revitalisation in China. Following the debut of LaneJoy Qihe, the rollout will continue with the 4,671 m² LaneJoy Sanjiang in Xuhui in Q2 2027, before expanding with the 18,485 m² LaneJoy Yunxiu in 2029.
